Why use interchangeable circular needles?

So, you’re in the market for a set of knitting needles? If we are being completely honest and transparent, the most eco-friendly and sustainable option would be to scour your local charity shops and/or Facebook marketplace, looking for second hand items for sale in your area. Most likely, you will find a bucket full of straight needles in a range of sizes and materials. Which would, no doubt, serve the primary purpose of enabling you to knit.

I had received hand-me-downs from family friends, almost all 4mm size straight needles in various lengths. When I looked in the local charity and community shops, as I expected, I found lots of straight needles in varying lengths.

At the time., I had a few larger projects on the go, including a baby blanket. I had purchased a set of bamboo circular needles, similar to these ones. I really should have known better; they were poor quality, the needles were too short and they were fixed to brittle cables. Long story short, I was not happy with my purchase and they did not last.

I really hate money and resources being wasted on bad purchases. So I decided to pause and give some thought to what I really wanted before buying something else. After much consideration, I decided the following were the most important factors to me.

Space saving

Our home is relatively small and I am always looking for ways to minimise our inventory. Choosing a compact set of interchangeable circular needles is a neat solution. You have all the needle sizes you will likely need, as well as cables in a few useful lengths. And all of these is packaged up with all the key accessories you will need, in a handy carry case.

This is especially convenient when knitting on the go. If you enjoy travelling, or just casting on a new project with the new yarn you’ve just purchased at a craft fair or local haberdashery, then carrying a set with all the essentials is the ideal solution.

I have always found that straight needles are quite cumbersome to pack and carry along when out and about. And I almost always drop stitches from the end of the working needle when I am pulling my project out of the project bag. Projects on circular needles are much easier to stow away in a bag on the go, and your stiches are much more likely to stay on your needle!

Ergonomics

Straight needles are great for small projects. It’s fairly easy to balance the right hand needle on your thumb and use your index finger to hook the yarn round (for all you English knitters!). But the bigger and heavier your project gets, the more taxing this can be on your wrists and forearms. I would often find that I needed to take a break every few rows.

Circular needles are SO much better. The weight of your project is on the cable, which you can rest in your lap or on a table if front of you. This allows the knitter to relax their shoulders and adopt a more comfortable posture. And it takes all the strain off your wrists.

Versatility

Circular needles are so incredibly versatile. You can knit flat or circular projects, of any size, with just a handful of interchangeable pieces of equipment.

What’s included in the KnitPro Believe Interchangeable Circular Needles Set?

If you are considering this set, then you will certainly want to know what’s included in the kit.

First and foremost, the needles themselves. There are seven pairs of stainless steel needles in a range of common sizes. The needles are 13cm long (approx 5.1”). And each needle has its size and an inspiring word laser printed onto it.

The needles are presented in a handy zippered case, with dedicated slots for each pair of needles.

Also included are three cables in three different lengths; 60 cm, 80 cm & 100 cm (approx. 23.6”, 31.5” & 39.5”).

Additionally, the set contains almost all of the essential accessories which you will need to get started with your next knitting project. There is a second zippered pouch for the accessories.

Positives

There I many reasons why I decided on this set of interchangeable needles, and it absolutely has not disappointed.

Primarily, the set includes a useful range of sizes of needles and cables. I have used every pair of needles included in the set; in fact, I frequently have a few in use concurrently as like to have multiple projects on the go! The needles themselves are of high quality and are very well made. I particularly enjoy the sharp tips which allows stitches to be picked up and knitted easily and accurately.

Secondly, the swivel cables are an excellent feature. They allow the cables a little freedom of movement relative to the needles. And this stops the needles from coming loose while you are knitting.

Thirdly, the range of handy accessories really does cover pretty much everything you need. The only item I have added is a tape measure.

Fourthly, all of these items are so beautifully presented in the zippered pouch and case. It is so easy to stow these in my knitting “go bag” so that I can keep crafting while out and about. I LOVE organisation and this set is an absolute joy to use.

Finally, there is the option to purchase more cables. Whether you just want to have more available to you for additional projects, or if you would appreciate some longer or shorter cables, you have the option to expand your collection.

Areas for improvement

I really had to scratch my head and think about this. The only potential negative I could think of is that there is no option to buy additional needles in this range, either in extended sizes or for spare parts.
